Agri-food is not one job. It is a technology sector, a trades sector and a food-security sector at once, and most people never find the door. This guide maps it into eight career streams, says what each one actually involves, and sets out four routes in — for students, for people changing sector, and for the farms doing the hiring.

Ontario's agri-food sector is not a single career path. Our programming maps it into eight streams — the same eight used across our workshops, tours and certifications — so that a starting point can be chosen by interest rather than by job title.

Which one applies depends on where you are standing right now, not on how much you already know about farming.
Cohort training built with a sponsor and run at a working farm — workshops, farm days and hands-on sessions. STEM Minds has taken this route from design through to completion. There is no open intake today.
Specialist High Skills Major lets Grade 11–12 students bundle credits toward the agriculture sector and earn recognised certifications before graduating.
Short, stackable certifications — food safety, technology, operations — that sit on a résumé immediately and can ladder into college programs.
Time on a real operation. The fastest route to being hired, and the one employers consistently rate highest when deciding between candidates.
The sector's constraint is people, not interest. These are the three ways operations work with us — all developed with Boreal Farms, an agri-tech operation running a living lab in King City.

No. Entry routes exist for people with no agricultural background. Programs are designed for three groups: secondary students in Grade 11 and 12, youth seeking upskilling or reskilling, and workers transitioning from other sectors.
A Specialist High Skills Major is an Ontario secondary school program that lets Grade 11 and 12 students focus their credits on a sector, including agriculture, and earn sector-recognised certifications alongside their diploma. STEM Minds delivers agri-tech SHSM workshops for schools.
Sector projections cited in the Ontario Agri-Food Workforce Guide indicate approximately 123,000 roles to be filled in Canadian agriculture by 2033, largely driven by retirement. See Sources for the underlying reference.
