Funded training and careers in Ontario agri-food

In Ontario, most entry-level agri-food training is free to the learner — it is paid for by government programs like the Skills Development Fund, and delivered by organisations that apply for that funding. STEM Minds is one of them. This page explains how the funding works, what the eight career streams actually involve, and the four routes into the sector.

Employment Ontario — Government of Canada and Government of Ontario

STEM Minds agri-food workforce programming has been delivered under Employment Ontario and Skills Development Fund projects, funded in part by the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario.

What is the Skills Development Fund?

The Skills Development Fund (SDF) is an Ontario government program that pays organisations to deliver training and skilled-trades projects. Organisations apply for project funding; participants then take part in that training at no cost to themselves. Individuals never apply to the fund directly — they register with the organisation delivering a funded program.

STEM Minds is a delivery partner, not the administrator of the fund. We have delivered agri-food workforce programming under successive SDF rounds with Boreal Farms, from the farm's living lab in King City.

"Agriculture is not one job. It is a technology sector, a trades sector and a food-security sector at the same time — and most people never see the door in."

The eight career streams

Ontario's agri-food sector is not a single career path. Our programming maps it into eight streams — the same eight used across our workshops, tours and certifications — so that a starting point can be chosen by interest rather than by job title.

Streams as delivered in STEM Minds agri-food programming, 2024–2026. Wage bands to be added — see Sources.
StreamWhat you would be doingWho hiresWhere to start
AgriTech Sensors, automation, data and controlled-environment systems applied to growing Indoor farms, greenhouse operators, equipment and software vendors AgriTech topic hub
Agronomy Soil, crop nutrition, yield and field management decisions Field crop operations, input suppliers, agronomic advisory firms Funded stream program
Horticulture Propagation and production of plants, produce and ornamentals Greenhouses, nurseries, market gardens, municipalities Funded stream program

Food Security Access, distribution and community food systems Non-profits, municipalities, community food organisations Community program
Skilled Trades Mechanical, electrical and equipment work that keeps operations running Farms, equipment dealers, processing plants Trades pathway + apprenticeship

Common questions

What is the Ontario Skills Development Fund?

The Skills Development Fund is an Ontario government program, administered by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, that funds organisations to deliver training and skilled-trades projects. Organisations apply for the funding; participants take part in the resulting training at no cost to themselves.

Do I apply to the Skills Development Fund myself?

No. Individuals do not apply to the fund. Employers, training organisations and non-profits apply for project funding, then recruit participants. As a participant you register for a funded program directly with the organisation delivering it.

Does funded agri-food training cost anything?

No. Programming delivered under a Skills Development Fund project is free to participants. Every agri-food program STEM Minds has delivered under the fund has been offered at no charge.

Do I need farming experience to start?

No. Entry routes exist for people with no agricultural background. Programs are designed for three groups: secondary students in Grade 11 and 12, youth seeking upskilling or reskilling, and workers transitioning from other sectors.

What is an SHSM in agriculture?

A Specialist High Skills Major is an Ontario secondary school program that lets Grade 11 and 12 students focus their credits on a sector, including agriculture, and earn sector-recognised certifications alongside their diploma. STEM Minds delivers agri-tech SHSM workshops for schools.

How many jobs are there in Canadian agriculture?

Sector projections cited in the Ontario Agri-Food Workforce Guide indicate approximately 123,000 roles to be filled in Canadian agriculture by 2033, largely driven by retirement. See Sources for the underlying reference.
